Winters coming or should I say it’s finally arrived. We always kea e plenty of food on our hives to ensure the bees have plenty to see them through days like this and the winter months ahead. Whilst the bees aren’t out as much, the list of jobs is still long, making sure all our hives are treated against disease is a must and insulated against the cold is a nice treat. we’ll also look to strap some of the more exposed hives down in the next few weeks… #beekind #winterscoming #wintershere #sustainability #livingwithnature #fieldtofork

This is very real and we should all know about it!!! I regularly hear on my experience days ‘I’m not a massive fan of honey…’ then my clients taste their real honey and ‘WOW! That tastes unreal… I can literally taste every flower’ and that my friends is the real life taste test. We’re all being mugged off folks. What you’re buying in the supermarkets simply isn’t honey. The honey industry faces new demands to overhaul its supply chain after more than 90% of sampled products bought from large British retailers failed pioneering authenticity tests.
The UK branch of the Honey Authenticity Network sent 30 samples last month from Britain for a novel commercial test based on the DNA profiles of genuine honey. Five were from UK beekeepers and 25 from big retailers, including supermarkets.
The tests found that 24 out of the 25 jars of honey from retailers were considered suspicious. All five samples from UK beekeepers were considered to be genuine. The message is simple, buy local, buy independent… cheap honey simply isn’t real pure honey like you think it is. Almost all the jars of this year’s honey are packed and ready for dispatch. The feedback so far has been overwhelmingly great!!! Thank you. 🙏🏻 if you are one of the few remaining that are patiently waiting for your honey, hang in there it’s really worth the wait. Just a reminder nothing is added or taken away to this honey (except bits of floating wax and debris) the honey is as the bees have made it. The flavour is pure and from the natural environment they live in and to have made this they’ve pollinated literally millions of plants… all raw honey will crystallise at some point, to avoid this try and keep it in a warm ish environment, if it does crystallise its ok, it hasn’t gone bad at all so don’t worry. if you’d prefer it to be runny pop it on a radiator overnight, or in a Bain-Marie for a few minutes, it’ll be runny and good to drizzle on your porridge in no time! A few of you have been asking about the honey extraction process… I do it the way it’s been done for hundreds of years. I simply remove the beautiful wax capping and place the heavy super frames into my spinner. I then spin it as fast as I can, without breaking them into a million pieces (note to self)… this flings the honey out of the frames against the side of the spinner. The honey then drips down to the bottom where it is collected. When it’s full, I simply open the tap and the golden honey pours out, it is then passed through a double sieve which collects all the little bits of wax and any debris. And that my friends is that. nothing added, nothing taken away, raw pure golden honey. The farmer has patience and trusts the process. He just has the faith and deep understanding that through his daily efforts, the harvest will come.And then one day, almost out of nowhere, it does…. Such wise words that I constantly remind myself. Nature finds a way, even when the odds and weather are stacked against it! Pretty much gathered in all the honey supers now, which feels like a momentous occasion. All the hard work throughout the spring and summer has brought us here, to this moment. It feels celebratory and remarkable that all the surplus honey we’ve harvested has come from our trees, hedgerows, gardens and fields and distilled down into this magical golden liquid. We were taught at school to be thankful for the harvest each year, I now truly truly understand this and feel incredibly grateful for this beautiful bounty and to be part of this wonderful occasion. The commute to work for this lovely lot was somewhat different today, climb in and hold on!!! Whilst we all know that the bees are vital to our very existence, play a major role in the world’s food production and a vital cog in our biodiversity… what these lucky few from @hartnelltaylorcook learnt today was the pure joy of being outside, immersed in nature with colleagues and friends and how incredibly good this is for us and our wellbeing. When I began this business a few years ago I hadn’t really legislated for how powerful these sessions would be and how the act of putting on some silly white suits, lighting a smoker and cracking open a few hives brings people together and creates happiness. Brilliant! Today’s gang were great fun, they all have!!!
