Honey, Honey…
When you have your own bees and hives, any extra honey they produce is all yours to enjoy.
But we’re careful about the word “extra” because it’s so important to leave enough honey for the bees themselves. They’ve worked hard to create it, and it’s essential for their health during the colder, leaner months of winter.
Just like us, when bees are hungry, they’re not happy – they get a little cranky! I like to think of it like my kids when they're hangry, it’s not pretty!
So, we make sure there’s always plenty of honey left for them, which means no need to feed them sugar syrup. This is a big deal – we want their honey to stay pure and natural, just as nature intended.
Sadly, this is becoming rare in today’s world of mass-produced honey. The honey you find on supermarket shelves often isn’t the real deal. But don't just take my word for it – I hear it all the time on my experience days: "I'm not really a honey fan..." And then, they taste the real stuff. And the reaction? "WOW! This tastes incredible – I can actually taste every flower!" That’s the real-life taste test, my friends!
Unfortunately, most of the honey you’ll find in the supermarket isn’t what it claims to be. In fact, more than 90% of honey sold by large British retailers failed a recent authenticity test! The Honey Authenticity Network found that 24 out of 25 jars from big retailers were considered "suspicious." But all five samples from UK beekeepers were the real thing. The message is simple: if you want real, pure honey, it’s time to go local, support independent beekeepers, or even better, have your own hives and do your own taste test!
Balms
We like to think of honey as the elixir of life (but we might be a little biased!). But it’s not just honey the bees give us – they also produce beautiful, pure beeswax throughout the year. As the seasons change and the hive grows, the bees are busy building new comb to store their honey and support their ever-expanding colony.
As beekeepers, part of our job is to ensure the hives stay in tip-top shape, with as little disruption as possible. Bees are natural builders, and they can get a little creative with their comb, often filling in any gaps they find, which can lead to some "extra" comb here and there.
Throughout the year, we carefully collect these bits of comb, melt them down, and filter them to leave us with clean, pure beeswax. And here's the exciting part – we’ve teamed up with a certified botanist who uses this wax to create gorgeous, all-natural balms. Beeswax is a fantastic natural solidifier, and just a little goes a long way.
So, if you’re looking for a beautiful, meaningful way to share your passion for bees and your values, this is a perfect opportunity! Whether you're talking to a small group or a larger audience, the products made with your hive’s wax are a wonderful way to spread the love for bees and the environment.
